DARKNESS RISING PROJECT
DARKNESS RISING PROJECT
Our Broadway performers with lived experiences use music as a vehicle to speak candidly about mental health. More than music, our nonprofit offers free wellness workshops, guest speakers, mental health educators, a Music & Mental Health Video Series, Darkness RISING: Live Black mental health block party, free resources and more for the Black community. Free mental health resource packets and live signups for Find Me a Therapist and REBUILD are provided at all events.
A free service which connects formerly incarcerated people of color to therapists of color and provides up to 10 free sessions of therapy for participants.
A free service which directly assists community members in the search for Black therapists. Black community members make customized requests for culturally competent therapy and receive contact information for up to 3 Black therapists which meet their criteria, tips for their first therapy consultation, and more.
A directory of Black therapists and mental health providers.
A digital and printed packet of directories, websites, apps, podcasts, organizations, advocates and more for the Black community.
Free community conversations, panel discussions and forums with Black mental health educators, licensed professionals and community wellness providers about the issues which impact our communities
We believe music heals. Research shows the benefits of music therapy for depression, trauma, schizophrenia and more.
Music acts as a medium for processing emotions and grief, and can also be utilized as a calming agent for anxiety. Despite feeling lost or broken, music can provide the opportunity for expression and for experiencing safety, peace and comfort.
We partner with mental health professionals and use art as a medium where the intersection of mental health education and art collide.
"I am forever grateful for the role Darkness RISING has played in my own mental health journey. I have been encouraged by the beautiful, generous, brave and open individuals who come together and use their talents to create art, share personal experiences and provide hope to those who may be struggling with mental health and the stigmas surrounding it. Through ripple effects, I have been inspired to seek therapy myself and now encourage others to do the same."
"I didn't even know how much I needed to see Darkness RISING: Live until I got to witness it. All those gorgeous, talented people being so open and honest in their performances, in a room full of support, was truly something special. Plus, getting valuable mental health resources--information that's sorely needed in our community. I went home feeling like my soul had been fed--can't wait for the next one!"
"Darkness RISING is an incredible resource for things I never knew I needed. It feels great being Black and having a space where I can connect with my peers about mental health. The live events are full of incredible talent, and so impactful on life - you walk in and walk out feeling completely refreshed. I’m so thankful for Darkness RISING!"
